SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

A new detector combines a laser with a mass spectrometer to provide on the spot analysis that researches hope will have applications ranging from evaluating a tumor as it is removed, to quickly detecting explosives in luggage.
The laser vaporizes tiny samples hat can be instantly analyzed by the spectrometer, and can be used even on living organisms, the US team said on Thursday.
Mr. Akos Vertes, a researcher and a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at George Washington University said they are taking about less than a second for an analysis.
Vertes and graduate student Peter Nemes say they have used their system to find a drug sample in urine, to detect the chemical changes that accompany color changes in a living plant leaf and to find explosives residue on a currency note.
The university has filed for a patent on the system, which Vertes said is the first to use a laser for such instant analysis of living tissue.
Called laser ablation electro spray ionization, or LAESI, it requires a desk sized space in a laboratory.
But smaller spectrometers and lasers could make it portable, Vertes said.
Currently surgeons send samples to a pathology lab, but this system could save precious minutes, he said further.

ANDAMAN ISLANDS

During a visit to the Andaman Islands, in India full of trekking adventures, the tourists are most excited to visit the volcanic islands.
If the aquamarine waters around the sunny islands wove a magical spell, the news that one tourist can see also see volcanoes is electrifying.
Is it dangerous?
But please be assured that the volcanoes the tourists see are bubbling away silently and are unlikely to explode immediately.
The journey to the volcanoes is breathtaking.
The journey starts from Port Blair, the capital city , through Jarwa tribal reserves, then the tourists are transferred to a ferry which carries across crystal blue waterways flowing between a host of thickly forested islands. The flora and fauna is yet another pleasant change for the fatigued minds.
Finally the tourists shall have to climb onto a very small boat, which takes through dense mangroves beyond the Baratang islands.
But the tourists are not alone; accompanying is nature at her luscious best, sporting an air of mystery and a coat of emerald green.
The final drive to the volcano shall take the tourists through dusty patches, but do not get too close.
The Andaman Islands is of volcanic origin, dating back millions of years. Below the feet the earth is churning away.
When it shall explode it will not stop for days.
Right the crater is rather silent, and the bubbling is of a minor proportion.
It is not angry lave, fire or smoke which the tourists expect.
But it is volcano right now with the green nature.

There is a temple near the lake, which is sometimes visited by swan-like birds. A little distance from here is to be found the remains of a dry lake.
Along the river Kuti are two passes Lampia Dhura and Mangsa Dhura, both leading to Tibet.

Bageshwar is the last town, with STD booth, last place of gas station, local govt accommodation facility is available here.
From Bageshwar to Song, at an altitude of 1300 m, the distance is 40 kms and it should take 2 hours by jeep, the roads are not good but the worst as well.

From Loharkhet to Dhaukri to Khati to Dwali to Phurkiya to ZERO POINT OF PINDARI GLACIER.
From the distance the frozen streams look like puzzle, Pindar river looks like a mystery, always trying to fight with the ice which tries to choke it and the river always trying to cut into the glacier.
The trip to Pindari glacier ends up to a arbitrary zero point, beyond this point the visitor shall not able to see the Nanda Devi and still Himalayan Peaks are beckoning .

ABI GAMIN --- ONE OF THE STALWARTS WITH GLACIERS AND CLIMBING.

A large of peaks in Himalayan are stalwarts and not open for the climbers, especially for the foreigners, mainly for the securities reason, since Tibet is the immediate neighbor.
Abi Gamin is one of these tall stalwarts, conquered only a few times.
Abi Gamin situated in the Chamoli Dist of Indian state of Uttarakhand, at the elevation of 7355 meters, is a serious challenge for the hard-core climbers.
It is hardly 2 kms from Kamet, another stalwarts of Himalaya.
It is between the famous passes, Manna pass and Niti pass on the Indian – Tibet borders. Alaknanda and Dhauli Rivers is the watershed of Abi Gamin.
More than a dozen expeditions since 1848 were done to conquer Abi Gamin but all have failed, until however, in year 1950 when the expedition of Anglo- English team succeeded in reaching the peak, the operation had been thru Tibetan side.
Later expeditions had been in the year 1953 and 1955 both from the Indian side of Kamet.
Whichever way you go be ready to face the glaciers, the hidden valleys, the killing cold and tedious climb.
For security reasons, the permission to these expeditions has to be cleared from Govt of India.
This expedition is for hard-core climbers. Keep necessary gear, the tents, the climbing tools, sturdy shoes and clothes, and spirit of daredevil.

Rongbuk Monastery founded in 1902, which lies at the foot of Rongbuk Glacier is the highest monastery ( 5100 ft) , it is only 200 meters down from the base camp of Mount Everest , has a dirt road facility now, but in 1921 when George Mallory came here he had to walk 5 weeks from Darjeeling to reach here.
From Rongbuk glacier the view is said to be most dramatic view , a panorama of Mount Everest with other peaks, often shrouded in clouds and mists, one shall see the imposing head of ice and granite , Mount Everest.
In 1983, the renovation work was undertaken by Govt and some type of basic guest house and a small restaurant has been established.

The atmosphere is clear, no plastic garbage no crowds, thanks to the Indian Army , they are keeping the things in order.
The region around is very suitable for Kiang, a mammal of horse family.

KANGCHENJUNGA------PRISTINE BEAUTY—WHITE WALL HANGING FROM THE SKY.

Kangchenjunga, 8586 meter, is the third highest mountain in world, first being Mount Everest and the second is K2.
Kangchenjunga, in Tibetan means “The Five Treasures of Snow”; the five treasures are gold, silver, gems, grains and holy books.
Though Kangchenjunga has variety of spellings, and spoken differently in Tibet and Sikiim (India), and Nepal the spelling given here is well accepted by usage.
Kangchenjunga has five peaks; out of these four are above 8400 meter. On May 25, 1955 the main summit was first climbed by a British Expedition , but the belief of the Sikkemese, who told that the peak is sacred, stopped a few feet from the top, since then most climbers honor this custom , they stop a few feet from the top.
Kangchenjunga has great many ridges forming a giant X shape.
Kangchenjunga is very remote in Nepal and has the difficult access in India, hence it has remained almost unspoilt, climbing and trekking is for hard-core men only.
From all over the world, people come over to a hill station Darjeeling (India), from where Kangchenjunga which is only 40 miles. Distant, to take the closest possible view without risking the life.
In both the countries, Nepal and India, Kangchenjunga areas are treated as conservation parks. In Nepal, Kangchenjunga sanctuary is home of Red Panda and other snow animals. In both countries enough efforts are done to conserve the forests.
There traditional two routes for trekking to Kangchenjunga, one is from Sikkim (India) starting Gangtok and other one is from Kathamandu (Nepal)
“The Himalayas must be approached humbly, respect their beauty, their majesty, and their power, and they will treat you as you deserve.” Frank Smythe said in 1932.

NANDA DEVI- BLISS-GIVING GODDESS

Nanda Devi, the second highest mountain in India, and the highest entirely in India (since Kanchenjunga is divided between India and Nepal) is locally worshipped as the patron goddess in Uttarakhand Himalaya. It is situated in the Uttarakhand state of India.
Nanda Devi has two peaked massif, on 2 kms high ridge, west –east side, the western massif is known as main Nanda Devi( 7816m)east massif is known as Nanda Devi east(7434m).
Nanda Devi main summit has typical geography, it has almost insurmountable barrier ring of some of the highest peaks of Himalaya, and twelve of these are 6400m. The interior of this ring is known as Nanda Devi sanctuary.
Nanda Devi is well-known for its large steep rise above local terrain.
Nanda Devi has always tempting the adventurisms , an attempt made by British explorers finally succeeded in entering Nanda Devi sanctuary in the year 1934.but it was in the year 1935 that a team of British American explorers finally succeeded in reaching the main summit.
Attempts were made by CIA to place a listening device to monitor the nuclear activity of Chinese in Tibet; in 1960 the Indian govt. had closed the sanctuary for any expeditions by foreigners or even to the Indians. In the year 1974 the sanctuary was re-opened for the expeditions by foreigners , locals and trekkers , and the damage to the eco system was so vast that the sanctuary was again closed 1983.
Nanda Devi sanctuary and the bio-sphere is now beyond the limit for any expeditions, and except in 1993when a team of Indian army was deputed to undertake the expedition to clear the garbage and check the whole scene.
Nanda Devi shall always remain a challenge to the dare-devils, if at all it is again re-opened.

SUNDARBANS NATIONAL PARK – A HOME OF UNTAMED AND FERAL CREATURES. COUNTRY OF BENGAL TIGERS

Like roaming in the jungles like Captain Cook or Robin Hood? Then put your foot in the Sundarbans National Park

Sundarbans lies at the mouth of Ganges spread across Bangladesh and West Bengal of India.
This national park is virtually cut off from human because the only access is by waterways, the launch service is available from Port Canning which is connected to Calcutta and other towns either by road or railways.
Sundarbans largest mangrove forest and Sundarbans National Park a home of Bengal both are listed in World Heritage List. The dreaded Bengal Tiger and so many other animals, untamed and feral reside here.
It is estimated that are 400 Bengal Tigers and 30,000 spotted deer alone here.
To wander here is like reminiscence of past life.
Fox jungle cats, Indian porpoise, wild ibis, are roaming here, and to above all the Bengal Tiger the king of this jungle.
But moving in the jungle one must be always on alert. You must have a guide and an armed escort with you.
Tigers attack from behind therefore the adventurists must cover their back well, people wear stiff pads, which rise up to the neck. The Bengal tigers kill here almost 100 to 250 people each year, so be careful.
Sundarbans has humid climate so the best season for adventure is December to March, when the air is dry, it is almost impossible to enter the core section of the jungle during monsoon when the roads are jeep treks are washed up or submerged by vegetations.
There are private tours organizations but it is really advised to take the tour organized by WBTDC which has it’s office in Calcutta.
A permit is necessary for Indians as well Foreigners, apparently for conservation purposes.
Tourists lodge and tiger camps facility is very well available in this Sundarbans National Park adventure.

MOUNT KAMET - FACE THE FORCEFUL WIND

In India in the Himalayan Mountains there are several peak and ranges standing high to challenge the adventure spirit of men.
Kamet is one of them. Kamet is in Chamoli dist of Uttarakhand in the Grahwal region of India. Kamet is a part of Zaskar range of Himalaya, the heights is 26000 ft.
The explanation of the name Kamet as is Grandmother of Snow Chains.
In appearance it appears like a giant pyramid standing with two peaks.
Kamet drains into two rivers namely Saraswati river and Dhauli Ganga River both are tributaries of Alaknanda river.
Since it is near Tibetan plateau Kamet remained least accessible and beyond the reach of so many expeditions. The greatest hurdles in climbing Kamet is the forceful wind that comes from Tibetan Plateau.
There are however additional tools and equipments now a day hence the climb has become somewhat straightforward and easier.
The standard route to climb Kamet is from the East Kamet Glacier. The ascent involves steep gullies, rock walls and glaciers climb. There are usually 5 to 6 camping requirements to reach the summit, and the last summit is very steep.
There is another route from Ranikhet in India.
The convenient expedition starting station is Haridwar near Delhi.
Fro security reason, since the neighboring countries are China and Tibet, a permission of the Govt of India is necessary.
At dawn and dusk the copper colored rocks reflecting on glaciers look like crackling flames bathing Kamet in glow.
